About

Hi there!

My name is Holly. Welcome to Beyond Kimchee!

I was born and raised at the southern tip of South Korea, in a lovely fishing town called Tongyeong, the most beautiful city in Korea.

I came to the United States to study in December 1990. I met my wonderful husband in college and the rest is history. We have lived in many places – Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Argentina, and the USA – and traveled all around the world as a family.

Nabi, our beloved canine labradoodle.

Update: While living in northern Virginia for 6 years, our children grew to adulthood and left home for college and a mission. My husband and I became empty nesters. Due to a new job assignment, we relocated to South Korea on August 2022 and are now living in the heart of Seoul. Although we left our children in the USA, we brought our beloved dog, Nabi, with us to Korea.

My Story

In 2010, I started blogging to provide a keepsake of my personal recipes as a legacy for my children. Someday when I am no longer with them, they will remember the food they ate at home, and be able to make it themselves. That’s why my blog provides detailed step-by-step instructions. This is my gift for them, and they better get it right!

In 2019, I published my first ever cookbook, “Korean Cooking Favorites.” The book consists of 75 of the most delectable yet authentic Korean recipes, including mouth watering Korean appetizers, main dishes, soups and stews, rice and noodle dishes, side dishes, kimchi, and dessert recipes. Please check out the My Cookbook page for more details.

Perhaps my passion for cooking came from traveling around the world and being exposed to different cultures and cuisines.  I respect, admire, and enjoy tastes from all over the world, and I never stop trying new flavors. At the end of the day, though, when I need some comfort, I always look for Korean food, the food of my home country.

It is awesome to be able to communicate with people through food. Do you feel inspired to cook up something Korean tonight? I will show you how.

Welcome to my world of Korean, Asian, world cuisine and beyond!
